What is a shepherd’s hut and what makes it “luxury”?

A shepherd’s hut is a compact, self-contained retreat traditionally used by shepherds, now beautifully reimagined for modern escapes. At Crabtree in the Woods, our huts combine timeless charm with contemporary comforts – think king-size bed, wood-burning stove, fully fitted kitchen, ensuite bathroom and private outdoor spaces (including a hot tub under the stars).

Where are the huts located and how private are they?

Each hut is nestled in its own secluded clearing within our private woodland in Lupton, Cumbria. You won’t see or hear another guest during your stay – just birdsong, rustling trees and the occasional deer.

Are your shepherd’s huts dog-friendly?

We love welcoming well-behaved dogs! A few of our huts are dog-friendly, please check the individual listing when booking or contact us directly for details.

Do the huts have heating and hot water?

Yes, all of our huts are fully insulated and feature wood-burning stoves to keep you cosy all year round as well as central heating throughout. You’ll also have hot water with a powerful shower.

Is there a kitchen or do I need to bring food?

Each hut includes a fully equipped kitchen with a hob, fridge, sink and all the essentials for simple, delicious meals. You can bring your own food to cook up a feast in the kitchen or there are lots of local pubs nearby should you wish to cooked for! We also offer locally sourced breakfast hampers, just add it to your booking!

Can I have a fire or BBQ during my stay?

Absolutely. Each hut has a firepit outside, perfect for evening fires and marshmallow toasting. We provide logs, kindling, and safety instructions for your stay.

Is there Wi-Fi or phone signal in the huts?

Most guests come to unplug, but yes, our huts have reliable Wi-Fi. Phone signal varies slightly depending on your provider, but most networks work well in the area.

What do I need to bring with me?

Not much! We provide fresh bed linen, fluffy towels, toiletries (including Bath House shampoo, conditioner and shower gel), kindling, cooking basics and more. Just pack weather-appropriate clothes, walking boots and something to read to relax and unwind!

Is there parking and how far is it from the huts?

Yes, there’s secure on-site parking specifically for guests staying in our huts at the top of the hut site, cars are parked away from the huts and yet only a short walk away with your luggage. Luggage trolleys or transport can be provided if needed for your short woodland stroll.
